Formed in 1998 under the moniker Plan 9, the band quickly garnered a local following before changing their name to Breaking Benjamin(a name which resulted from a gig gone wrong said Benjamin Burnleyin an interview) in late 2000 and signing to Hollywood Records, where they released their first major-label record, Saturate, in 2002. The record had clear influences and touches of Tool, KoЯn, and Nirvana. The first single Polyamorousreceived much radio airplay, and propelled the band to stardom. Ben Burnley says that he taught himself the guitar by listening to Nirvana's Nevermind. He also explained in an on-air radio interview of the band (Tucson, AZ station KFMA) that he's written most songs at least half-drunk, with one exception.

Well I know you dont know the reason
And its cold, a sign of the season
cause youre old, and battered and beaten
And well grow, til we hit the ceiling, yeah
[chorus]
Oh we better, get away
Send a letter, bombs away
Youre covered in my skin
I couldnt imagine anyone else
Come up for the weekend
I couldnt imagine why you would save yourself
Well its gone and its not returning
And your clothes and pictures are burning
cause youre old, and battered and beaten
And well grow, til we hit the ceiling, yeah
[chorus x 3]
